What Causes a Glow in the Dark Effect?

Glow in the dark crafts for kids are always fun to make, but what is the scientific explanation for things that glow? There’s actually some chemistry behind the popular glowing fun. Inside glow sticks and glow in the dark paint is a substance called phosphor. Phosphor gives off a small amount of visible light when energized. However, for the phosphor to be energized, it must be exposed to light. This explains why it takes some time for the glow to appear. Phosphors also don’t give off much visible light themselves, which is why you have to hold them in dark places to actually see the glow. Nowadays, chemists have come up with compounds to make phosphors shine more brightly and for longer periods of time. Who knew that chemistry could create such a fun craft for kids?
