Pirate and Alien Pet Rocks

They come in peace, matey. Make pet rocks with personality and pizazz when you craft Pirate and Alien Pet Rocks from Polyform. This tutorial teaches you how to make a pet rock that's cool, fun, and a total looker. While rocks on their own can be pretty lame, add Sculpey to them and make an awesome new toy. The beauty of using rocks is that they're all inherently different, so no two pet rocks will be the same. Pirates and aliens are known to team up and abduct your treasure, so keep an eye on these crafty guys!

Pet Rocks

Materials:

  • Tool Set
  • White Craft Glue
  • Rocks
  • Sculpey® III: Purple - 2 oz-- 1 block
  • Sculpey® III: Black - 2 oz-- 1 block
  • Sculpey® III: White - 2 oz-- 1 block

Tips:

  • Every rock is a unique size and color. You can use these designs and adapt them to fit the shape and size of your own rock. Start out with rocks that are clean. Rocks with a little texture on them will probably help the clay stick to it better. You can glue your clay pieces onto the rocks as well if you like. Just glue each piece onto the rock with a little dot of white craft glue and then bake them on.
  • Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4” (6 mm) thickness.  For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
